Course Description

Read Like a Writer: Selected Shorts

“If you don't have time to read, you don't have the tools to write.” – Stephen King

Close reading is one of the best ways to elevate your writing. Every text is an opportunity to study craft: What did the writer do that worked? What didn’t? Was the character believable? Does the dialogue reveal and deepen character? Were there moments of confusion, or moments you couldn’t put the piece down? Which sections did you skim, and which did you return to again and again?

Through reading, discussion, and weekly assignments, we will learn and practice specific techniques explored in class.

When we read as writers, we deepen our understanding of the tools authors use to build story and engage readers. In this class, we will explore ways to elevate our own writing by analyzing and emulating techniques used across genres.

Each week prior to class, you’ll receive a curated selection of short readings or a longer piece. Readings may include essays, selected chapters, short stories, and flash fiction or nonfiction.

Each session begins with a brief lecture, followed by a group discussion focused on the techniques used in the assigned readings. We will examine how writers build worlds, shape dialogue, and structure their stories. Topics may include story structure, scene and setting, syntax, point of view, character development, dialogue, theme, and the use of tension and pacing.

In class, we will consider what worked—and what didn’t—in each piece, and reflect on the choices we can make to strengthen our own writing and keep readers engaged.

When relevant, we’ll also explore the author’s background and publishing journey, recognizing that every piece of writing takes a unique path into each reader’s hands.

We will meet every other week to allow ample time for reading. A writing assignment will be given at the end of each session, designed to help you practice and integrate the techniques into your current work or projects in development.
